Bobi Wine encouraged youth to begin their political journeys early, stating that doing so would allow them to effectively contribute to lasting political transformation.

KAMPALA, UGANDA | Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine and president of the National Unity Platform (NUP), has called on young people to take the initiative in driving political change by actively seeking elective positions.

Speaking at the NUP youth convention held on Friday at the agricultural showgrounds in Jinja City, Kyagulanyi emphasized this year’s theme: “What Young People Can Do to Create Change.”

He encouraged youth to begin their political journeys early, stating that doing so would allow them to effectively contribute to lasting political transformation. “I entered politics at 35, and I felt it was too late due to the responsibilities I had taken on. Many of you are still in your twenties, which is the ideal time to engage in shaping the change you want to see,” he remarked.

Kyagulanyi aims to inspire youth who desire change, asserting that their aspirations can be realized through active political involvement. He stressed that true leadership is measured by how many people one can uplift, and that the youth’s commitment is essential for meaningful progress.

“Many of you place your hopes in me, but I also depend on you to rise to the occasion and foster the change we need. This will ultimately reflect my ability to inspire my generation,” he stated.

He further highlighted the importance of electing leaders who share a vision for progress at all levels, from local governments to parliament.

Michael Adong, the NUP youth chairperson for Northern Uganda, noted that the region has historically faced marginalization due to past conflicts, which has hindered youth voices for change. However, he pointed out that ongoing civic education initiatives in higher education institutions are encouraging more young people to engage politically.

Maria Natabi, the youth chairperson for Eastern Uganda, added that many young individuals often leave political opportunities to older generations, who may lack the passion to advocate for policies addressing key issues like education, employment, and social welfare.

Joel Ssenyonyi, the leader of the opposition in Parliament, echoed Kyagulanyi's sentiments, stating that such conventions aim to empower youth to reclaim political sanity in the country. He emphasized that only through active resistance to injustices and unfair treatment can young people's rights be recognized by those in power.
