The Alliance Française Kampala rooftop was buzzing with energy last Saturday evening as Ugandan-born, London-based singer Seby Ntege returned for a homecoming concert that truly lived up to its billing. Dubbed "Made in Uganda," the event was more than just a concert—it was a vibrant celebration of music, culture, and heritage that drew in a diverse crowd of friends, well-wishers, diplomats, and alumni.
The excitement was palpable from the start, with the venue filling to capacity well before 7 PM. The evening kicked off with a live Ugandan band that captivated the audience with its spirited opening acts, setting the perfect tone for what was to come. As the sun set and anticipation grew, it was clear that this was going to be a night to remember.
When Seby Ntege finally graced the stage, dressed in a striking all-white outfit and a regal black king’s robe, the crowd erupted into cheers. Backed by a skilled six-piece band, Seby delivered a performance that was nothing short of mesmerizing. He treated the audience to a mix of his greatest hits from the "Five Notes" and "Love and Heritage" albums, including fan favorites like "Ondabilanga Maama," "Kiri Omulangira," "Maria," and "Babirye Omulongo." The crowd, clearly familiar with his work, sang along enthusiastically, creating a communal atmosphere that was both electrifying and heartwarming.
But Seby didn’t just rely on his vocal prowess to wow the crowd. As a multi-instrumentalist, he seamlessly transitioned from singing to playing the acoustic guitar and the Janzi, a traditional Ugandan string instrument. His mastery of these instruments added an authentic layer to his performance, blending modern sounds with deep-rooted cultural heritage. The audience, captivated by his artistry, danced and sang in unison, fully immersed in the experience.
Reflecting on the night, Seby couldn’t hide his satisfaction.
"It went better than I expected. You may have followers online, but it's different when you're on the ground. Seeing people turn up and playing with a new band, I think it went quite well," he shared with this platform.
The concert was a resounding success, with the joy and energy in the air serving as a testament to Seby’s impact. Whether it was the magnetic music, the free sugarcane juice that kept everyone refreshed, or the impeccable production by Brian Aliddeki, one thing was clear: Seby Ntege had created a night to remember.
Hailing from Busoga in eastern Uganda, Seby Ntege’s journey is a testament to his deep connection to his roots. A master of traditional African instruments, Seby’s musical journey began at the tender age of 13 with the Nile Beat Artists band. Over the years, he has become one of Uganda’s most accomplished musical exports, blending traditional sounds with modern influences and collaborating with artists from various genres. His homecoming concert was a fitting tribute to his rich heritage and a celebration of his continued success.
