* President uses new year address to call for unification just weeks ahead of the key elections on the network.
* Taiwan elections are scheduled to take place on 13th January this year.

With just a week left for Taiwan' key elections, President Xi has vowed that surely his country will ne reunified during a televised new year address. The leader said that the Chinese on both sides of the Taiwan strait should be bound by a common sense of purpose and and share in the glory of rejuvenation of Chinese nations. As 2024 marks the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, Mr. Xi has vowed to reunify both sides of the of the strait by 2049 the target date for achieving the Chinese dream. The People's Republic of China has never ruled Taiwan and vows to annex it by force if if neccesary.
The Taiwanese president Tsai Ing- wen responded to Mr. Xi's saying that the future of Taiwan will only be decided through democracy. She also called for the resumption of cross strait relations which would enhance peace in the region. She further noted that Taiwan faces a big challenge between democracy and authoritarianism but the battle can only be won through continuing to upheld democracy and protecting peace on the island. The above comments come with less than two weeks to the presidential and parliamentary elections slated for January 13th.
William Lai, the current front runnner and vice president of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party said he is open for taks with China however Beijing labels the DPP as separatist force that advocates for the independence of Taiwan though the DPP says that the island is already an independent and sovereign country which should not any declare independence. Ever since the electoral victory of Mrs. Tsai in 2016, China has cut off ties with Taiwan and also stepped up military presssure through naval vessels and aircrafts into Taipei's territorial waters and airspace with increasing tension.
