It is interesting to learn that Uganda has been ranked second among the top English-speaking countries in Africa, according to the English-Speaking Countries 2023 report by World Population Review. This report categorizes English-speaking countries into different circles based on the prevalence and usage of English within their populations.
The inner circle consists of countries where English is the native language of the majority of the population, such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and much of Canada. South Africa is the only African country listed in the inner circle.
The outer circle comprises countries where English is not the native language but is widely used as a second language, with smaller communities of native English speakers. In Africa, Nigeria leads the list of English speakers in this category, with a population of 213 million and 111 million people identified as fluent in English.
Uganda ranks second in the outer circle, with 29 million people proficient in English out of a population of 45 million. Cameroon, with a population of 27 million, has 9.8 million people fluent in English.
While Kenya did not feature in the top three highest English-speaking countries in Africa according to the World Population Review report, other sources such as Milestone Localization and CCJK Technologies have ranked Kenya among the top English-speaking countries in Africa. These sources indicate that a significant portion of Kenya's population, up to 50 percent, can speak English.
It's worth noting that rankings can vary depending on the criteria and sources used, and language proficiency can be measured in different ways. Nonetheless, Uganda's high ranking in English proficiency within Africa is commendable.
