    The Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) is reeling from a tragic loss as Chief of General Forces, Gen. Francis Ogolla, perished in a helicopter crash at the Kaben-Cheptulel border, between Elgeyo Marakwet and West Pokot counties. The incident, which occurred Thursday afternoon, has sent shockwaves across the nation, leaving many in mourning.

    The ill-fated chopper, carrying a total of seven passengers, crashed under circumstances yet to be fully elucidated. Initial reports from the police indicated that five occupants lost their lives in the crash. Subsequently, it was confirmed that Gen. Ogolla was among the deceased. The fate of the remaining passengers remains uncertain.

    Gen. Ogolla, aged 61, was returning from a peace mission in West Pokot and Elgeyo Marakwet counties when the tragic accident transpired. His untimely demise marks a profound loss for the KDF and the nation as a whole.

    Born Francis Omondi Ogolla, he began his illustrious career in the Kenya Defence Forces on April 24, 1984. Commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant on May 6, 1985, he was initially posted to the Kenya Air Force. Over the years, Gen. Ogolla rose through the ranks, demonstrating unwavering dedication and leadership prowess.

    In 2023, President Ruto appointed Gen. Ogolla as the new Chief of Defense Forces, succeeding Gen. Robert Kibochi who departed after attaining the mandatory exit age of 62.. His tenure was marked by a commitment to enhancing national security and fostering peace within the region.

    Following news of the tragic incident, the Defence Council convened an emergency meeting to assess the situation. Chaired by Defence Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale, the council was attended by the three chiefs of the Defence forces, along with the Principal Secretary in the Defence ministry.

    Additionally, President Ruto swiftly convened an urgent meeting of the National Security Council at State House Nairobi. State House Spokesperson Hussein Muhamed confirmed the development via Twitter.

     "President William Ruto has convened an urgent meeting of the National Security Council at State House Nairobi this evening following a Kenya Defence Forces’ helicopter crash this afternoon in Elgeyo-Marakwet County." he stated. 

     

    As the nation grapples with this tragic loss, tributes pour in for Gen. Francis Ogolla, a dedicated servant of the nation whose legacy will endure in the annals of Kenyan history. President Ruto, the Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces, had promoted Ogolla to the rank of General. Before the appointment, General Ogolla was the Vice Chief of the Defence Forces.

    He joined the military on April 24, 1984, and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant on May 6, 1985. He was posted to the Kenya Air Force and began his military career as a fighter pilot. Gen Ogolla is a graduate of ÉcoleMilitaire de Paris and the National Defence College of Kenya.
