In a surprising turn of events, President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda has announced that he will be taking "forced leave" for two days following a positive COVID-19 test result. The president made the announcement on Thursday, stating that he had delegated his duties to Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja during his absence.
President Museveni, who has been known for his cautious approach to the coronavirus pandemic, revealed that he had recently stopped wearing face masks due to allergic reactions in his eyes and throat. He explained that these allergies had previously caused him to lose his voice on two occasions during the elections.
"I have, therefore, taken the second forced leave in the last 53 years since 1971 when we started fighting Idi Amin. The other time was when I had a problem with sinuses and had to lie low for a few days at Mweya," President Museveni tweeted.
The 78-year-old leader stated that he began experiencing mild flu-like symptoms on Tuesday but initially ignored them, continuing with his scheduled meetings in Entebbe and working on his State of the Nation Address. However, on Wednesday morning, he noticed flu-like symptoms in one nostril and immediately contacted his doctors to take samples and rule out COVID-19.
Three samples were taken, including one rapid test and two PCR tests. The rapid test and one of the PCR tests came back negative, but the remaining PCR test confirmed that President Museveni had indeed contracted the coronavirus. As a precautionary measure, he traveled separately from the first lady in a different car while the samples were sent for reconfirmation.
President Museveni's announcement serves as a reminder that even with strict preventive measures in place, no one is immune to the risk of COVID-19. His decision to take forced leave demonstrates a responsible approach to safeguarding his health and the well-being of those around him.
During his absence, Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja will assume the president's duties. The government continues to emphasize the importance of adhering to public health guidelines and encourages citizens to remain vigilant in the fight against the ongoing pandemic.
The news of President Museveni's positive COVID-19 test result has raised concerns among the population, highlighting the need for continued efforts to contain the spread of the virus. As the country faces this unexpected development, it is hoped that the president will make a swift recovery and that his absence will not hinder the progress of the nation's response to the pandemic.
Uganda, like many other countries around the world, continues to grapple with the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. This latest development serves as a stark reminder that the virus remains a persistent threat and reinforces the importance of adhering to preventive measures, such as wearing masks, practicing social distancing, and getting vaccinated.
President Museveni's decision to prioritize his health and take necessary precautions should serve as a reminder to all Ugandans to remain vigilant and prioritize their well-being during these challenging times. The nation's thoughts and wishes for a speedy recovery go out to President Museveni and all those affected by the virus.
