In a surprising turn of events, despite submitting more than five entries for consideration in the 66th edition of the Grammy Awards, Uganda finds itself without a single nomination. The Ugandan music industry had high hopes, but unfortunately, the recognition did not materialize for its talented artists.
Among the notable artists from Uganda, Jose Chameleone and Eddy Kenzo were prominent contenders for several categories. Chameleone's song "Ready" was under consideration for Best Global Music Performance and Best Music Video, while Eddy Kenzo's "Blessing" was in the running for Best Global Music Album, and "Ukulele Esanyu" featuring Daniel Ho was considered for Best Global Music Performance, among other nominations.
Mc Norman and Vinka were also hopefuls in the Best Reggae Album and Best Global Music Performance categories, respectively, with their albums "Twelve" and "Bailando." GNL Zamba's "Hustle and Motivate" was another entry that received consideration.
However, the final nominations announced included other global and African artists. In the Best Global Music Performance category, tracks like "Shadow Forces" by Arooj Aftab, Vijay Iyer & Shahzad Ismaily, Burna Boy's "Alone," and "Silvana Estrada" by Milagro Y Disastre were highlighted. Notable mentions also went to Asake & Olamide, Ayra Starr, Burna Boy, Davido, and Tyla in the Best African Music Performance category.
The Best Global Music Album category showcased diverse entries, such as 'Epifanías' by Susana Baca, 'History' by Bokanté, 'I Told Them' by Burna Boy, 'Timeless' by Davido, and 'This Moment' by Shakti.
In the Best Reggae Album, international artists like Buju Banton, Beenie Man, Collie Buddz, Burning Spear, and Julian Marley & Antacus secured nominations, leaving Mc Norman from Uganda out of the list.
The Grammy Awards, set to take place on Sunday, February 4, 2024, at Los Angeles' Crypto.com Arena, will feature leading artist SZA with an impressive nine nominations. Phoebe Bridges closely follows with seven nominations. The awards ceremony will be broadcast on CBS and Paramount+, with the annual Grammy Awards Premiere Ceremony preceding the main event. Despite the disappointment for Ugandan artists, the global music community is gearing up for a night of celebration and recognition of outstanding talent.
