The debate on Bubble gum music is on the fast rise in Uganda currently with many people coming out either in defense of it or against it.
Whereas there are some people that say music is music regardless, there are some that argue that certain music should not be welcomed on the Music scene. A few artistes are of the view that as long as the audience welcomes a song, it qualifies to be a song because a musician put in time to compose the music and even go to studio to record it.
Other artistes however state that the Ugandan Music industry is losing value as every kind of music is being welcomed, something that will plunge the Ugandan music industry into an abyss.
Well, even music producers are joining in on this debate with some stating that they are not working with artistes that want to make Bubble gun music. Renown music Producer Anko Ronnie is one of the few producers that have come out to condemn Bubble gum music. According to him, he will not work with any artiste that wants to produce such kind of music.
“I refuse to work with artistes that want to produce bubble gum music. Don’t bother coming to my studio and telling me to work with you if you are also doing that kind of music.” He stated during an interview with Galaxy FM.
When asked what he terms as Bubble gum music, Anko Ronnie was quick to state that any music that is generated out of a trending word is Bubble gum music and he would never get involved in such projects.
“As long as a musician comes to me and says we should make a song out of a trending word or a trending statement, I will never be willing to work with them. That is Bubble gum music. If you sing that kind of music, don’t come to me asking to work with me.” He stated.
The debate is only getting hotter with many people picking sides in regards to this music. The ironic thing however is that the music that is being highly criticized is still the same music that is being welcomed by music lovers. Where does this leave creatives that always aim at singing timeless music then?
Does the music industry really require gatekeeping like musician A Pass suggested? And if so, will this influence music fans into listening to the timeless music creatives are dying so hard to promote?
