M23 rebel group bowing to pressure? Announce a cease fire.
    • February 3, 2025 • 3 months ago
    in summary
Many believe the ceasefire is not actually genuine and could onlybe a tactical move designed to buy time to re-arm and restrategize, especially as pressure mounts from many Internationat states as well as super power countries.

The M23 rebel group that is currently operating under the Alliance Fleuve Congo (AFC), has finally come out and announced a unilateral ceasefire which is set to begin on February 4, 2025. The reason stated for this ceasefire is humanitarian concerns amid the escalating conflict in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

In an official communication issued on February 3 2025, the M23 rebel group claimed that the ceasefire was in response to the “humanitarian crisis caused by the Kinshasa regime (Rwanda),” while stating its commitment to protecting civilians in areas under its control.

“The Alliance Fleuve Congo (AFC/M23) hereby informs the public that, in response to the humanitarian crisis caused by the Kinshasa regime, it declares a ceasefire starting February 4th, 2025, for humanitarian reasons,” the statement read.

The ceasefire announcement came shortly after South African President Cyril Ramaphosa vowed to reinforce South African National Defence Force (SANDF) troops deployed in the DRC something that has made the timing of the M23 announcement rather suspicious majorly regarding the rebles' true intentions.

President Ramaphosa came out and condemned recent attacks that killed 14 South African soldiers and therefore called for Rwanda to immediately withdraw its forces from Congo. He further accused Kigali Rwanda of backing M23, a charge Rwanda keeps on denying.

At the same time, Western countries, including the United States and the United Kingdom, have piled pressure on Rwanda to cease hostilities and pull its troops from the DRC. Rwanda's involvement in the whole unrest has caused concern, so much that the UK warned Kigali would lose its annual $1bn global aid if Rwandan troops stayed in DRC.

Many believe the ceasefire is not actually genuine and could only be a tactical move designed to buy time to re-arm and restrategize, especially as pressure mounts from many Internationat states as well as super power countries.

According to analysts,  it is no secret that ceasefires are often used by armed groups to regroup and strengthen their positions and now given M23’s recent territorial gains, this could be part of their own broader strategy to consolidate their control while deflecting international criticism. And since the war has been going on for a while now, there could be need for the rebel group to re-arm.

It is however arguable that M23 rebles could be threatened by the ongoing cautions from various super power Countries hence seeing the need to cut down and announce this ceasefire.
